Bladder stone removal, also known as litholapaxy, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to break down and remove bladder stones. These stones form when minerals in the urine crystallize and clump together within the bladder, leading to symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, frequent urination, difficulty urinating, or blood in the urine. During the litholapaxy procedure, which is typically performed under general or regional anesthesia, the surgeon inserts a small tube called a cystoscope into the bladder through the urethra. The cystoscope is equipped with a camera and specialized instruments, allowing the surgeon to visualize the bladder and locate the stones. Once the stones are identified, they are fragmented into smaller pieces using ultrasonic or laser energy, or crushed using mechanical devices. The fragmented stones are then flushed out of the bladder through the urinary tract or removed with a grasping instrument. Recovery from litholapaxy is usually quick, with most individuals able to return home the same day as the procedure and resume normal activities within a few days.
