Hysteroscopy with endometrial ablation and biopsy refers to a surgical procedure involving hysteroscopy with dilation and curettage (D&C) and endometrial ablation. This combined procedure is typically performed to diagnose and treat abnormal uterine bleeding or other uterine conditions. Hysteroscopy with D&C involves the insertion of a hysteroscope, a thin, lighted tube with a camera, through the cervix into the uterus to visualize the uterine cavity. Dilation of the cervix may be necessary to facilitate the passage of instruments. Once inside the uterus, surgical instruments are used to perform a curettage, scraping away or suctioning out the lining of the uterus, to obtain tissue samples for biopsy or to remove any abnormal tissue. Following the D&C, endometrial ablation is performed to destroy or remove the lining of the uterus, often using techniques such as thermal ablation, radiofrequency ablation, or laser ablation. This combined approach offers both diagnostic and therapeutic benefits, helping to alleviate symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding and providing a more comprehensive evaluation and treatment of uterine conditions.
