Partial mastectomy, also known as lumpectomy or breast-conserving surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to remove a portion of the breast tissue containing a breast tumor, along with a surrounding margin of normal tissue. This approach is commonly used as a treatment option for early-stage breast cancer, allowing for the removal of the tumor while preserving much of the breast's appearance and function. During the procedure, the surgeon carefully excises the tumor along with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal. Afterward, the remaining breast tissue is reshaped to maintain a natural contour. Partial mastectomy is often followed by radiation therapy to target any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. This approach offers the advantage of preserving the breast, minimizing the need for extensive reconstruction and promoting improved cosmetic outcomes and psychological well-being for many patients.
