I was born and raised in Brooklyn, surrounded by my fellow Puerto Ricans, but was educated in predominantly white institutions. I am now living through the gentrification of the same neighborhood I grew up in. I have experienced life in a close-knit community and experienced life outside of one. Those experiences taught me the importance of having that close, supportive community. Whether it is a shared culture, religion, or interest, I believe we all need to have a space where we feel comfortable to be fully ourselves. By volunteering with people in crisis, I have seen how often a lack of support can be a major risk factor for mental health issues.
